 Antarctica is Earth’s southernmost continent and the fifth-largest of the world’s seven continents. It is almost entirely located south of the Antarctic Circle and surrounds the geographic South Pole. The continent is surrounded by the Southern Ocean.Key Geographical FactsArea: Approximately 14.2 million km² (about 5.5 million square miles). This makes it larger than Europe or Australia but smaller than Asia, Africa, North America, or South America.

Ice cover: About 98–99% of the continent is covered by the Antarctic ice sheet, which has an average thickness of around 1.9–2.2 km. Only about 1–2% consists of ice-free rock, mainly along the coasts and in scattered oases.

Ice volume: Antarctica holds about 70% of the world’s freshwater and 90% of the world’s ice. If the entire ice sheet melted, global sea levels would rise by nearly 60 meters.

Elevation: It is the highest continent on average, with a mean elevation of about 2,300 meters. The highest point is Vinson Massif at 4,892 meters. Some areas under the ice, such as the bed of the Denman Glacier, lie more than 3,500 meters below sea level.

Shape and features: Roughly circular, with the long Antarctic Peninsula extending toward South America. Major features include the Transantarctic Mountains (which divide East and West Antarctica), vast ice shelves (such as the Ross and Ronne ice shelves, covering about 11% of the continent’s area), and numerous glaciers.


East Antarctica is a large, high ice plateau, while West Antarctica is lower and more rugged, with several ice streams and subglacial lakes (including Lake Vostok).ClimateAntarctica is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent on Earth — often called a polar desert.Temperatures: The lowest recorded temperature on Earth was −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F) at Vostok Station on 21 July 1983. Interior winter temperatures often fall below −60 °C to −70 °C. Coastal areas are milder, with summer temperatures sometimes rising above freezing (highest recorded around 15–20 °C on the Antarctic Peninsula or nearby islands). The Antarctic Peninsula has the most moderate climate.

Precipitation: Extremely low — average annual precipitation (as snow) is only about 50 mm (liquid water equivalent) over the interior plateau, though coastal areas receive more. Rain is almost unknown except in rare coastal events.

Winds: Strong katabatic (downslope) winds are common, sometimes reaching hurricane force. The continent experiences continuous daylight in summer (polar day) and continuous darkness in winter (polar night).

Seasons: Summer (December–February) and winter (June–August). East Antarctica is generally colder than West Antarctica due to higher elevation.


Wildlife and EcosystemsThere are no native land mammals or reptiles. Life is concentrated in the surrounding ocean and coastal areas.Marine animals: Penguins (emperor, Adélie, chinstrap, gentoo, and others), seals (Weddell, crabeater, leopard, elephant, and fur seals), whales (including blue, fin, humpback, and minke), and various seabirds (petrels, albatrosses, skuas).

Key species: Antarctic krill forms the base of the marine food web and supports most of the larger animals.

Terrestrial life: Extremely limited — mainly lichens, mosses, algae, and microscopic invertebrates (mites, nematodes, tardigrades, and a few insects) in ice-free areas and coastal oases.

Marine productivity: The Southern Ocean around Antarctica is highly productive, especially in areas of upwelling, supporting large populations of krill, fish (such as toothfish and icefish), squid, and seabirds.


Commercial fishing for krill, toothfish, and crab is regulated by international agreements.Mineral ResourcesVarious minerals have been found in small quantities, including iron ore, chromium, copper, gold, nickel, platinum, coal, and possible hydrocarbons. Large coal deposits exist in the Transantarctic Mountains, and iron ore near the Prince Charles Mountains.However, mineral exploitation (except for scientific research) is strictly banned under the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty (Madrid Protocol). Any future commercial mining is currently prohibited.Human Presence and GovernancePopulation: No permanent inhabitants. Temporary population consists of scientists and support staff at research stations — roughly 4,000–5,000 in summer and about 1,000–1,300 in winter.

Research stations: Dozens of year-round and seasonal stations operated by about 30 countries (examples include McMurdo Station of the United States, Vostok of Russia, and others from many nations).

Governance: Governed by the Antarctic Treaty System (signed in 1959, entered into force in 1961). The treaty designates Antarctica as a scientific preserve, bans military activity, and suspends territorial claims. Seven countries maintain historic claims (Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, New Zealand, Norway, and the United Kingdom), but these are not widely recognized. The treaty has been signed by more than 50 countries.

Tourism: Growing but regulated. Tens of thousands of tourists visit each summer, mainly by ship, focusing on the Antarctic Peninsula.


History and ExplorationThe existence of a southern continent was long theorized. The first confirmed sighting of the Antarctic mainland occurred in 1820 by a Russian expedition led by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev. Further exploration continued through the 19th and early 20th centuries, including the heroic age of Antarctic exploration (Amundsen reached the South Pole in 1911, Scott’s expedition arrived shortly afterward). Modern scientific research intensified after World War II and especially with the International Geophysical Year (1957–58), which led to the Antarctic Treaty.Environmental Importance and ChallengesAntarctica plays a critical role in the global climate system. Its ice sheet influences sea levels, ocean circulation, and weather patterns worldwide. The continent and surrounding ocean are sensitive indicators of climate change. Current concerns include ice-shelf collapse, glacier retreat (especially in West Antarctica), rising temperatures on the Peninsula, ocean acidification, and the impact of tourism and research activities on fragile ecosystems.Antarctica remains one of the most pristine and scientifically valuable regions on Earth, protected primarily for peaceful scientific research and environmental conservation.
