The Arctic Ocean – The Smallest and Coldest Ocean on Earth


The Arctic Ocean is the smallest and shallowest of the world’s five major oceans. It is located in the Northern Hemisphere and is almost completely surrounded by the continents of Europe, Asia, and North America.


Area and Size:

The total area of the Arctic Ocean is approximately 14.06 million square kilometers. It is largely covered by sea ice throughout the year, especially in winter.

The Arctic Ocean includes many marginal seas, such as:

- Barents Sea

- Kara Sea

- Laptev Sea

- East Siberian Sea

- Chukchi Sea

- Beaufort Sea

- Greenland Sea

- Norwegian Sea


Climate:

The Arctic has an extremely cold polar climate. Winter temperatures can drop to –40°C or lower, while summer temperatures usually range from –10°C to +10°C. The region experiences polar day (24-hour sunlight) in summer and polar night (24-hour darkness) in winter. Strong winds and blizzards are common.


Population:

The Arctic region is sparsely populated. About 4 million people live in the Arctic areas of the eight Arctic countries (Russia, Canada, USA/Alaska, Norway, Denmark/Greenland, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland). Indigenous peoples such as the Inuit, Sami, Nenets, and Yakuts have lived here for thousands of years.

Despite its extreme cold climate, the Arctic Ocean plays a vital role in global climate regulation and is becoming increasingly important due to climate change and new shipping routes.
